Record Online Sales Fueled Holiday Shopping Season, Analysis Shows

This year’s holiday shopping sales beat out last year’s by more than three percent. MasterCard crunched the numbers for purchases across all payment types between November 1st and December 24th, and say growth over the same period in 2018 was 3.4 percent. The study named online shopping as the greatest contributor to retail U.S. spending– online sales for the period were up nearly 20 percent compared to last year, and accounted for roughly 15 percent of total retail transactions for the 53-day period. One analyst says one reason for the record figures is this year’s later than usual Thanksgiving holiday, which fell on November 28th, as it shortened the traditional shopping season and prompted online retailers to offer sales earlier than usual.
