The Bakersfield City Council may soon consider an ordinance to stop the sale of tobacco products to anyone under 21. Sales to minors under 21 have been steadily decreasing, but the Neighborhoods and Community Relations Committee thinks more can be done by adopting a permit to sell tobacco, a move inspired by a county ordinance where tobacco vendors must pay $135 a year for a retailer’s permit, plus penalties for violations.
